Smart Cloud Factory

The Smart Cloud Factory is a project focused on the digitalization and integration of production systems, aimed at revolutionizing Volkswagen Group factories worldwide. This global and innovative initiative seeks to renew and optimize production line systems, driven by digital transformation and the creation of sustainable, globally critical solutions. One of the major challenges of this project is the integration of traditional OT environments with IT. Factories and their complex systems, which have traditionally operated in isolation, must now reformulate their industrial engineering processes to accommodate this global convergence brought about by digital transformation. The projects below exemplify our commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to drive the digital transformation of our production systems, ensuring that Volkswagen Group remains at the forefront of industrial innovation.

Smart Cloud Factory

One of our notable sub-projects within the Smart Cloud Factory involves Computer Vision, a branch of Artificial Intelligence that enables computers to interpret visual information, such as images or videos. The primary objective of this project is to reduce manual efforts by consolidating multiple visual inspections at different checkpoints. This approach aims to: 

  • Reduce inspection time to single-digit seconds. 

  • Improve inspection accuracy, leading to more efficient quality assurance processes. 

By leveraging images captured by cameras, we enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of visual inspections, ultimately contributing to better production quality and operational efficiency. 

Another significant initiative under the Smart Cloud Factory is Low-Code Development. This software development approach relies on visual interfaces, drag-and-drop components, and pre-built code modules to create applications with minimal traditional coding. By adopting low-code development, we accelerate the creation of innovative applications, reduce costs, and provide accessible and flexible solutions to meet various business needs. 

Common use cases for low-code development include: Internal Tools, Customer-Facing Applications, Process Automation and Data Analytics Dashboards.

We provide support to Volkswagen Group stations across the world with a Data-driven approach that supports the development and implementation of advanced testing methodologies for test vehicles and vehicle testing, ensuring the highest standards of efficiency, reliability, and connectivity. 

We empower the automotive industry by providing comprehensive datalogging solutions that enhance vehicle performance, safety, and innovation. By meticulously logging, storing, and analyzing ECU signals and connections, we garantee manufacturers to gain critical and data-driven insights into vehicle behavior.  We are committed to driving the future of automotive technology through precision, expertise, and a relentless focus on quality.

The installation procedure of datalogger measurement technology is conducted in two stages. These stages are the initial meeting and the zero check (referred to in German as the Startgespräch and Nullcheck, respectively). During the initial meeting, the scope of the measurement technology is determined based on the vehicle type, installed control units in the vehicle, test course and test indicator (EPKZ) set by the module managers. During the initial meeting, the measurement technology is installed in the test vehicles in accordance with the requirements and any anomalies are reported. These are rectified by the workshop during the zero check. During the zero check, the installation of the measurement technology and the data transmission from the vehicle are checked again.

The generated data during vehicle testing is recorded on SSD cards which are placed inside the dataloggers. After testing is complete, the SSD cards are read and the data is uploaded to IAV Merida Hub. This “clould” software platform stores the data of many test vehicles of different platforms and enables for easy access and to specifically convert datalogger raw data into different formats. Data is now ready to be analysed and provided to the VW stations across the world to further develop software and/or INTERNAL hardware features that will make vehicles safer, more reliable, efficient and competitive in the automotive industry.

Providing remote support to Volkswagen stations across the world and sharing our knowledge with different people from many cultures is a big part of the datalogger project only possible due to the international recognition of the Volkswagen brand. Effectively, as a team we are able to remotely troubleshoot any problems that may arise with the dataloggers and ensure their correct use. Furthermore, data can be accessed and extracted remotely, dataloggers can be assigned to vehicles and fleets and bespoke configurations with unique features and constraints depending on the country the vehicle is undergoing testing can be devised.
